Crystal Snowflake Coins

In 2007 the Royal Canadian Mint released their first ever coin with embedded Swarovski crystal elements. The design contained Swarovski crystals within a six-sided dendrite ice crystal, often referred to as a snowflake. The coins contained either six aquamarine or six iridescent crystals and one central clear crystal. Each year after 2007 the Royal Canadian Mint has produced two different crystal snowflake coins each year and the series has remained popular, selling out each year. In 2011 a different design was introduced along with the six-sided version.

Crystal Raindrop Coins

In 2008 the Royal Canadian Mint released their first ever coin with embedded Swarovski crystal elements AND colorized effects, known as the crystal raindrop. The design reflected a single crystal "drop of water" falling off a maple leaf. This design has been continued with a varying theme each year after 2008 and remains popular.

Crystal Birthstone Coins

In 2011 the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a new series featuring birthstones for each of the 12 months of the year (January (Garnet), February (Amethyst), March (Aquamarine), April (Diamond), May (Emerald), June (Alexandrite), July (Ruby), August (Peridot), September (Sapphire), October (Tourmaline), November (Topaz), December (Zircon)). Each of the 12 coins featured a single Swarovski crystal element at the center of the pure silver coin with a face value of $3. A second series has begun for 2012 featuring a different design with a single Swarovski crystal element.

Other Crystal Coins

After much success with Swarovski crystal elements in the snowflake and raindrop coins, the Royal Canadian Mint began experimenting with other designs which would incorporate crystal elements. Some of the designs include pine cones, Christmas trees, the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and water lilies, all with crystal elements embedded into the coin.
